The Kentish Plover, known as the Snowy Plover in the Americas, is a small, pale plover found on coastal beaches and saline flats. It is characterized by its slender build, subtle plumage, and a single, often incomplete breast band.
Where to spot
Widely distributed across coastal and inland saline habitats in Eurasia, Africa, and the Americas. Found on sandy beaches, mudflats, salt pans, and saline lagoons.
How to spot
Look for its very pale, sandy-brown upperparts and bright white underparts, with a single, often incomplete or broken, black breast band. Its legs are dark. It is often inconspicuous, blending seamlessly into its sandy surroundings. Listen for its soft, whistled 'wit-wit'.
When to spot
Year-round in many resident populations; migrants are best observed during spring and autumn along coastlines. Breeding season (spring/summer) offers chances to see nesting pairs and chicks.

The Kentish Plover often nests directly on open sandy or shingle beaches, relying heavily on its excellent camouflage and quick dashes to evade predators, making its nests very difficult to spot.
