Spotted
The Pacific Golden Plover is a medium-sized plover, closely resembling the European Golden Plover, distinguished by subtle physical differences and its incredible migrations across the Pacific Ocean.
Where to spot
Breeds in the Arctic tundra of Alaska and Siberia, migrating to winter across a vast area including Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and numerous Pacific islands. Found in tundra, grasslands, coastal mudflats, and open fields.
How to spot
Similar to European Golden Plover, but generally slimmer with a longer primary projection (wingtip extends further beyond tail) and usually a slightly more pronounced white flank stripe in breeding plumage. Listen for its short, whistled 'chu-weet' call.
When to spot
During breeding season (Northern Hemisphere summer) in Arctic regions; during migration (spring and autumn) along coastlines and stopover sites; and throughout the Northern Hemisphere winter in its vast southern range.

The Pacific Golden Plover has one of the longest non-stop migratory flights of any bird, often flying thousands of miles over the open ocean without rest between its Alaskan breeding grounds and its Pacific island wintering sites.
