How to spot
Scan coastal mudflats and sandy beaches during migration. Note its short bill and overall size relative to other plovers. Breeding males have striking rufous breast and mask.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration along coastal stopover sites. Summer in Central Asian breeding grounds, winter in coastal non-breeding grounds.
This plover is known for its impressive migratory journeys, traveling thousands of kilometers from its breeding grounds in Central Asia to wintering sites across Africa, Asia, and Australasia.
