Spotted
The Spur-winged Plover (often considered synonymous with Spur-winged Lapwing, Vanellus spinosus) is a widespread species of lapwing found across parts of Africa, the Middle East, and southern Asia. It has a distinctive spur on its wing.
Where to spot
Inhabits open grasslands, wetlands, and cultivated fields across a wide range from sub-Saharan Africa through the Middle East to parts of South Asia.
How to spot
Look for them in open, disturbed ground, or near water. Their loud, screeching alarm calls are very characteristic. The sharp spur on the wing is visible in flight or close observation.
When to spot
Present year-round in most of its resident range. Active during daylight hours, often foraging in open ground.
