Spotted
The Rufous-chested Dotterel is a small, well-camouflaged plover found in the high altitudes of the Andes. Its rufous chest is a distinctive feature.
Where to spot
High Andean plateaus and grasslands in South America, from southern Peru through Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Requires patience due to its cryptic plumage and preference for open, stony ground. Scan with binoculars across the terrain for movement; its distinctive chest patch helps identification.
When to spot
Typically found during the austral summer months when breeding, and moving to lower elevations in winter. Observe during daylight hours.
