Widespread across North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. Common in villages, towns, agricultural areas, and rocky semi-deserts.
How to spot
Look for it around buildings, cultivated areas, and rocky outcrops. Listen for its characteristic, often scratchy song. Its streaky brown body and relatively plain grey head are good clues.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most vocal and visible during the breeding season (spring to summer).
