Spotted
This small bunting is notable for the breeding male's striking, entirely chestnut upperparts and bright yellow underparts. Females are duller but still show warm tones and are streaked.
Where to spot
Breeds in the taiga forests of Siberia and Northeast Asia. Winters widely across Southeast Asia, including parts of China, India, and Indochina.
How to spot
Males are unmistakable with their vibrant chestnut and yellow plumage, often seen in open woodlands, scrub, and agricultural fields. Listen for their short, simple, yet distinctive song.
When to spot
Most commonly observed during spring and autumn migration (typically May and September-October) as it passes through various habitats, or during winter in its southern range.
