A relatively drab but elegant bunting, distinguished by its grey head and neck, contrasting with warm buff underparts. It prefers arid, rocky landscapes.
Where to spot
Breeds in arid, rocky areas of central Asia, Middle East, and parts of the Himalayas; winters in India and northeast Africa.
How to spot
Look for them on stony slopes with sparse vegetation. Their subtle grey and buff plumage provides good camouflage. Listen for their simple, short, and rather quiet song.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and autumn migration through suitable habitats, or on breeding grounds in summer when they are most active.
