A handsome bunting with a distinctive grey head pattern and rufous underparts, typically found in rocky, open habitats. Its song is simple but pleasant.
Where to spot
Primarily found in mountainous and hilly regions across southern Europe, North Africa, and central Asia, preferring dry, stony areas.
How to spot
Search for them in rocky outcrops, dry slopes, and terraced agricultural areas. Look for its distinctive grey head pattern with white eye-ring and malar stripe, and listen for its simple, repetitive song.
When to spot
Year-round resident in many areas; most vocal during the breeding season (spring and summer), when males sing from prominent rocks.

The Rock Bunting's plumage provides excellent camouflage against the rocky and sparse vegetation of its preferred mountainous and scrubby habitats, allowing it to blend in seamlessly.
