Spotted
The Bornean Tree Babbler is a medium-sized babbler endemic to the island of Borneo. It is known for its distinctive patterned plumage, featuring white streaking on a dark background, which helps it blend into the forest floor.
Where to spot
Endemic to Borneo, inhabiting lowland and lower montane primary and secondary forests, preferring dense undergrowth, bamboo thickets, and limestone areas.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, whistled calls, which can be hard to pinpoint. Look for subtle movements on the forest floor among dead leaves and fallen branches. Its white-streaked face and breast are key identification marks.
When to spot
Resident throughout the year. Best observed during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning or late afternoon, when it is most actively foraging.
Unlike many babblers that forage in flocks, the Bornean Tree Babbler is often observed alone or in pairs, quietly sifting through leaf litter.
