This medium-sized pheasant is endemic to the evergreen forests of Indochina. It is characterized by its duller overall plumage compared to other peacock-pheasants, but still features prominent iridescent ocelli.
Where to spot
Lowland evergreen and semi-evergreen forests in southern Vietnam and eastern Cambodia.
How to spot
Listen for their characteristic 'cackle' calls in dense forest. They are shy; use binoculars and scan the forest floor near clearings or paths where they might emerge to forage.
When to spot
Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon; observations are possible year-round.
