The Black Chachalaca is a medium-sized, dark-plumaged cracid native to the cloud forests of Central America. It has a relatively long tail and a somewhat slender build compared to other guans.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane cloud forests and evergreen forests from southern Mexico (Chiapas) through Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua to Costa Rica.
How to spot
Look for them in the mid-story and canopy of montane forests. They can be shy but are often detected by their loud, characteristic calls. Binoculars are helpful for spotting them among dense foliage.
When to spot
Most active during early mornings and late afternoons when foraging for fruits, seeds, and insects.
