The White-bellied Chachalaca is a game bird native to Central America, easily recognized by its pale underparts, contrasting with darker upperparts. It inhabits a variety of dry to humid forest types.
Where to spot
This species ranges from southern Mexico (Chiapas) through Guatemala and El Salvador to western Honduras. It prefers dry deciduous and evergreen forests, as well as secondary growth and plantations.
How to spot
Their distinctive, loud calls, often a series of 'cha-cha-lac' notes, are a primary way to locate them. Look for them moving through the mid-story of trees or foraging on the ground in small family groups.
When to spot
Present year-round. The most active periods, and thus the best for observation, are early mornings and late afternoons when they are most vocal and foraging.
