Spotted
The Grey-winged Francolin is a cryptic, medium-sized game bird endemic to Southern Africa. Its mottled plumage provides excellent camouflage against the grassy and rocky landscapes it inhabits, making it challenging to spot.
Where to spot
Found in various open habitats across Southern Africa, including grasslands, fynbos, karoo shrublands, and montane slopes.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, loud, and echoing 'i-KEE! i-KEE!' call, often given from cover. Scan open grassy or stony areas, especially near roads or tracks at dawn and dusk.
When to spot
Most active during the cooler parts of the day, particularly early morning and late afternoon, when they forage.
