Spotted
The Himalayan Quail is a critically endangered and possibly extinct quail species, last definitively sighted in 1876. It was native to the western Himalayas.
Where to spot
Historically found in tall grass and scrubby hillsides at mid-altitudes (1,650-2,400 meters) in the Kumaon region of the western Himalayas.
How to spot
Observing this species would be an extraordinary event. Focus on exploring historical habitats, particularly areas with dense grass and scrub on steep, south-facing slopes. Listen for any unique calls, though its vocalizations are poorly known. Extreme patience and considerable luck would be required.
When to spot
If still extant, it would likely be most active at dawn and dusk. Any potential sightings would be extremely rare and highly significant.
