The Greater Honeyguide is a medium-sized, somewhat drab bird, but it is famous for its extraordinary behavior of guiding humans and honey badgers to wild beehives. It is a brood parasite, relying on other birds to raise its young. Its loud calls are a characteristic sound of African woodlands.

Widespread in various wooded habitats, from dense forests to savannas and dry woodlands, across most of sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often loud and persistent 'whit-purr' or 'victor' call. If it starts calling persistently and flying short distances ahead of you, it may be attempting to guide you to a beehive. Follow carefully and respectfully.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most vocal during the breeding season. Best observed during the dry season when food sources might be scarcer, increasing its motivation to guide.
