The Green Pheasant is a beautiful game bird endemic to Japan, recognized as the national bird. Males are distinctive for their glossy, dark green body plumage and a purple-tinged head.
Where to spot
Native to forests, woodlands, cultivated land, and open fields across the main islands of Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu).
How to spot
Look for them foraging on the ground in open areas near cover. Males are easily identifiable by their iridescent green plumage. Listen for their distinctive crowing call, similar to that of the Ring-necked Pheasant.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during early morning and late afternoon. The breeding season in spring offers excellent opportunities to observe males displaying and calling.
