Spotted
The Timor Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula oenothorax) is a large, distinctive pigeon endemic to the island of Timor. It is often considered a subspecies of the Pink-bellied Imperial-Pigeon, but its isolated distribution and specific features warrant attention.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Timor, which is divided between Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Found in lowland to montane forests, including dry deciduous and evergreen forests.
How to spot
Scan the canopy of tall forest trees, particularly those bearing fruit. Listen for their deep, resonant coos which often betray their presence. Patience and good binoculars are key for a clear view in dense foliage.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during early mornings and late afternoons when they are actively feeding. Their presence can be more noticeable during specific fruiting seasons.
Despite its large size, this pigeon is an agile flier within dense forest, navigating effortlessly through the canopy to find its preferred fruits.
