Spotted
The White-rumped Spinetail is a swift species characterized by its dark plumage and a striking white rump patch. These aerial masters are perfectly adapted for life on the wing, spending most of their days catching insects high above the canopy.
Where to spot
Typically found in South Asia, including countries like India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and parts of Southeast Asia. They inhabit open woodlands, deciduous forests, and forest clearings, often near water bodies or human settlements.
How to spot
Look for fast, erratic flight patterns high in the sky. Their most distinctive feature, the white rump, is visible during flight. Listen for their high-pitched calls, which often give away their presence before you see them.
When to spot
Best observed during daylight hours, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when insect activity is high. They are resident birds, so can be found year-round within their range.
Like many swifts, White-rumped Spinetails construct their nests by gluing twigs and feathers together with their own saliva, often attaching them inside tree cavities or hollows.
