A small, elegant gull known for its vibrant red legs and bill, and its striking black head in breeding plumage. It often travels in large flocks, especially during migration.
Where to spot
Breeds in the prairie wetlands of North America, migrating south to winter extensively along the coasts of Peru and Chile, and inland South America. Can be seen during migration across the continent.
How to spot
Look for its small size, dark hood, red bill and legs (in breeding plumage), and distinctive white crescents above and below the eye. Note the prominent white leading edge on the wing with a black trailing edge.

Most easily observed during spring and fall migration as large flocks pass through. Breeding occurs in summer in North America, and wintering in South America.
