An elegant, pale gull recognized by its long, thin, drooping dark red bill and gentle expression. It is typically found in coastal lagoons and saline wetlands, often wading gracefully.
Where to spot
Breeds around the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and Central Asia. Winters along coasts from the Mediterranean and Red Seas to India and Southeast Asia.
How to spot
Look for its very slender, dark red bill which often appears slightly drooping, and its very pale grey upperparts. Adults have pale eyes and typically lack a dark hood. Often seen standing gracefully or wading in shallow water.
When to spot
Breeding season from April to July. Migration periods are March-April (northbound) and August-October (southbound). Present year-round in some parts of its range.

Unlike many gulls, the Slender-billed Gull rarely has a dark hood, even in breeding plumage, maintaining its characteristic pale head with only a faint pinkish blush on the breast.
