Renowned for undertaking the longest migration of any bird, the Arctic Tern is a sleek, agile seabird. It spends its life traveling between its Arctic breeding grounds and Antarctic wintering areas, experiencing two summers annually.
Where to spot
Breeds in Arctic and sub-Arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. Winters in Antarctic waters. Can be seen during migration along almost all coastlines and oceans globally.
How to spot
Look for its all-red bill (lacking a black tip), relatively short legs, and exceptionally long tail streamers. In flight, it appears very buoyant and graceful. Distinguish from Common Tern by bill color and subtle plumage differences.
When to spot
Primarily observable during their epic spring and autumn migrations, and during the short Arctic summer breeding season.

Arctic Terns experience more daylight than any other animal, as they fly from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back each year, covering an astonishing round trip of up to 49,000 miles (79,000 km).
