Spotted by
The Greater Scaup is a medium-sized diving duck, identifiable by its rounded black head (males) and distinctive blue-grey bill. These highly migratory birds spend summers in Arctic and subarctic regions and winters on large bodies of water further south.
Where to spot
Breeds across the Arctic and subarctic tundra and taiga of North America, Europe, and Asia. Winters widely across temperate regions of North America, Europe, and Asia on large freshwater lakes, coastal bays, and estuaries.
How to spot
Look for them on large open water bodies, often in extensive rafts with other diving ducks. Males have bright white flanks and a black chest, while females are browner with a distinct white patch at the base of the bill. Distinguish from Lesser Scaup by the male's rounder head and broader bill.
When to spot
Best observed during migration periods (spring and autumn) and throughout the winter months in their non-breeding grounds.
