Spotted
The Fire-fronted Bishop is a visually striking weaver species from East Africa. Breeding males are mostly black with a prominent fiery-red patch on the forehead and crown.
Where to spot
Endemic to the highlands of East Africa, including parts of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, typically found in moist grasslands and montane savannas.
How to spot
Look for the male's distinctive red forehead and crown contrasting with its black body. They can be found perching on tall grasses or performing flight displays in their habitat.
When to spot
Most conspicuous during the breeding season, generally during the local wet season, when males are in their vibrant breeding plumage.
Its specific scientific name, 'diadematus', refers to the 'diadem' or crown-like red patch on the male's head.
