Spotted
The Red Bishop is a familiar African weaver, with breeding males adorned in brilliant scarlet-red and black plumage. They are common residents of grasslands and cultivated areas.
Where to spot
Common throughout sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting grasslands, savannas, marshes, and cultivated fields. Introduced to some other parts of the world.
How to spot
Search in tall grass or reedbeds, especially near water. Males' vivid red plumage makes them hard to miss as they perform display flights or perch conspicuously.
When to spot
Most visible during the breeding season (typically the rainy season) when males are in their striking red and black attire and are actively displaying.
