The Banded Weaver is a distinctive weaver bird with a yellow body and a prominent black band across its chest in breeding males. It is a common species of open savannas.
Where to spot
Widespread across a broad band of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Tanzania. Inhabits savannas, grasslands, and cultivated areas, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its bright yellow plumage and the distinct black band across the chest (in breeding males). They are often seen in noisy groups around colonial nesting sites. Listen for their constant chattering.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are in their brightest plumage and are actively building nests.
