Spotted
The Red-billed Quelea is perhaps the most numerous wild bird species in the world, known for forming immense flocks that can number in the millions. Breeding males have a distinctive red bill and face mask.
Where to spot
Found across most of sub-Saharan Africa, inhabiting open grasslands, savannas, and agricultural lands.
How to spot
Look for vast flocks, especially in agricultural areas or grasslands. Their sheer numbers and synchronized flight patterns are unmistakable. During breeding, males' red bills are prominent.
When to spot
Visible year-round. The timing of their massive aggregations and breeding activity is highly dependent on rainfall and food availability.
