Where to spot
Widespread across Europe and parts of western Asia. Found in open woodlands, parks, orchards, large gardens, and pastures with scattered trees, especially where ants are abundant.
How to spot
Listen for its unmistakable loud, laughing 'yackle' call. Look for it on the ground near ant hills or climbing low on tree trunks. Observe its bounding flight with deep undulations.
