The Robust Woodpecker is a large, powerful species, characterized by its bold black and white plumage and a vivid red crest. It is a denizen of humid forests, often found in the canopy or on large dead trees.
Where to spot
Native to southeastern South America, including Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, inhabiting mature humid forests, particularly Atlantic Forest remnants.
How to spot
Look for its large size and striking black and white barring, coupled with the male's prominent red crest. Listen for its loud, far-carrying calls and heavy, resonant drumming.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours and can be observed year-round. It is often most vocal and active in the early mornings.
