Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Inhabits lowland and hill rainforests, often preferring primary or mature secondary forests.
How to spot
Look for its overall green plumage with the unique checkered pattern on its throat and upper breast. Males have a red crown. Listen for its distinct calls and drumming, which can be quite loud.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observed year-round in its resident range. Mornings are often best for sightings and vocalizations.
This species has a particularly long, extensible tongue that can be rapidly protruded to capture insects from deep within wood crevices or under bark.
