The Banggai Scops Owl is a small, critically endangered owl endemic to the Banggai Islands off Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a highly localized and rare forest resident.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Banggai Islands (Peleng, Banggai) off eastern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Inhabits lowland forests.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and restricted island habitat. Identification relies on its characteristic scops owl features and its very precise geographic range. Listening for calls at night in appropriate forest habitat.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Observations are exceptionally rare.
This owl is known from very few sightings and specimens, making it one of the most poorly understood owl species, and its survival is gravely threatened by habitat loss.
