The Flammulated Owl is one of North America's smallest owls, barely larger than a robin. Named for the subtle flame-like markings on its plumage, it is a migratory species of montane forests.
Where to spot
Primarily in montane coniferous and mixed forests across western North America, extending south to Central America and parts of Mexico.
How to spot
Listen for its low-pitched, single or double 'hoot' call, which can be difficult to pinpoint. Use a red-filtered flashlight to minimize disturbance if attempting to spot it at night.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, active from dusk to dawn. Best sought during spring and early summer when males are most vocal and establishing territories.

Unlike most owls, the Flammulated Owl primarily feeds on insects, especially moths and beetles, which it often catches in flight, making it a unique nocturnal insectivore.
