The White-fronted Scops Owl is a small, forest-dwelling owl found in Southeast Asia, distinguished by its prominent white eyebrow. It is a nocturnal predator of insects.
Where to spot
Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Inhabits lowland and submontane rainforests.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive call, often a series of rapid 'hoo-hoo-hoo' notes. Look for its small size and white forehead/eyebrow in combination with its rufous or brown plumage. Spotlighting at night in dense forest is required.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal. Most active and vocal from dusk to midnight.

Like many scops owls, this species is highly cryptic and relies on its camouflage to blend perfectly with tree bark during the day, making it incredibly difficult to spot when roosting.
