Spotted
A robust antpitta with a rich, saturated rufous-brown plumage. It is a secretive resident of humid montane and cloud forests, often detected by its loud, booming calls.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests of the Andes, from southwestern Colombia south through Ecuador and into extreme northern Peru. It prefers the understory of dense cloud forests.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, hooting calls. To observe, find quiet trails in suitable forest habitats and wait patiently near where calls are heard. It often forages on the forest floor but stays close to cover.
When to spot
Most vocal and active during the early morning and late afternoon. Observation is possible year-round within its range.
