The Araucuan Chachalaca is a game bird native to eastern Brazil, often considered a subspecies of the Plain Chachalaca (*Ortalis vetula araucuan*) but treated here as a distinct entity. It's known for its relatively plain plumage.
Where to spot
This chachalaca is found in eastern Brazil, particularly within remnants of the Atlantic Forest and adjacent scrubland, from Espírito Santo north to Bahia.
How to spot
Locate them by their loud, rhythmic cackles and hoots. They are often seen in small family groups, moving through the mid-story of dense forest or along forest edges. Patience is needed as they can be shy.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. The best times for observation are early morning and late afternoon when they are most vocal and foraging in trees or on the ground.
