Spotted
Hartert's Frogmouth is a secretive and poorly known nocturnal bird, endemic to Borneo. It possesses the characteristic wide gape and cryptic plumage of other frogmouths, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its forest habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Borneo, where it inhabits primary and mature secondary lowland rainforests, often preferring dense undergrowth.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and camouflage. Best chances are during night walks in suitable Bornean rainforests, listening intently for its unique calls, which are distinct from other frogmouths in the region. Spotlighting is necessary.
When to spot
Like all frogmouths, it is active at night, foraging for insects. It roosts motionless during the day, making it difficult to find.
