Hodgson's Frogmouth is a small, cryptic nocturnal bird found in parts of South and Southeast Asia. Its remarkable camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly with lichen-covered branches, making it incredibly difficult to spot.
Where to spot
Found in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, ranging from Nepal eastward through Northeast India, Myanmar, Thailand, and into parts of Vietnam and Laos, primarily in evergreen and deciduous forests.
How to spot
Due to its superb camouflage, finding it during the day is challenging; focus on areas with dense, mossy branches. At night, listen for its distinctive, often soft and melancholy calls, which are usually a series of 'whoos' or 'hoo-hoos'.

Active exclusively at night for hunting insects. During the day, it roosts motionless on branches, relying on its exceptional camouflage.
