Spotted
The Papuan Frogmouth is the largest of the frogmouths, a robust nocturnal bird known for its impressive size and powerful camouflage. Its plumage mimics tree bark, allowing it to blend seamlessly into its forest environment.
Where to spot
Native to New Guinea and its surrounding islands, including some parts of northern Australia, inhabiting lowland rainforests, woodlands, and monsoon forests.
How to spot
Due to its size, it can be slightly easier to spot than smaller frogmouths if its roosting site is known. Listen for its deep, booming 'oom-oom-oom' calls at night. A strong spotlight can reveal its large, reflective eyes.
When to spot
Active during the night, especially from dusk to dawn, when it forages for large insects and small vertebrates. During the day, it roosts motionless on branches.
