Spotted
Gould's Frogmouth is a nocturnal bird from Southeast Asia, known for its impressive camouflage that helps it blend perfectly with forest environments. It has the characteristic wide, frog-like mouth for insectivorous feeding.
Where to spot
Found in parts of Southeast Asia, including the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and some smaller surrounding islands, inhabiting lowland rainforests.
How to spot
Look for its cryptic form on branches during daylight hours; patience is key. At night, listen for its calls, which are often a series of soft, mournful hoots or 'coo-coo' sounds. Spotlighting can reveal its eye shine.
When to spot
Primarily active at night, particularly at dusk and dawn, when it hunts for insects. During the day, it roosts motionless on tree branches, relying on its excellent camouflage.
This species has a distinctive 'gaping' display where it opens its wide mouth to reveal a bright yellow or white interior, possibly used for startling predators or courtship.
