Spotted
A nocturnal bird native to parts of Southeast Asia, the Sunda Frogmouth is a master of disguise, with plumage patterns that perfectly mimic dead leaves or bark. They are part of the unique frogmouth family.
Where to spot
Primarily found in lowland and montane forests, including degraded and secondary forests, across Borneo, Sumatra, and other Sunda Islands.
How to spot
During the day, meticulously scan tree branches, especially those with moss or lichen, for their perfectly camouflaged form. At night, listening for their distinct vocalizations is often the best way to locate them.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, hunting insects after sunset. They spend their days roosting quietly and camouflaged.

When disturbed, the Sunda Frogmouth will often adopt a 'broken branch' pose, stretching its body vertically and closing its eyes to further enhance its camouflage and avoid detection.
