Spotted
The Grey-throated Frogmouth is a secretive, small nocturnal bird endemic to Sumatra and Borneo. It possesses the characteristic wide gape and superb camouflage of other frogmouths, allowing it to blend into its forest environment.
Where to spot
Endemic to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, inhabiting primary and mature secondary lowland rainforests, often in dense areas.
How to spot
Finding this species is difficult due to its elusive nature and camouflage. Night birding in suitable forest habitats on Sumatra or Borneo offers the best chance. Listen for its soft, often repeated 'hoo-hoo' calls. Use a powerful spotlight carefully.
When to spot
Active at night when it forages for insects. It spends its days roosting motionless on branches, relying on its perfect camouflage.
Its 'grey throat' can be a subtle distinguishing feature, contrasting with the often more rufous or brownish body plumage, although this is hard to see without a close view.
