Spotted
The Daurian Jackdaw is a distinctive corvid closely related to the Eurasian Jackdaw, primarily found in East Asia. It exhibits two main colour morphs: one all black and another with a striking white collar and underparts. It is a social and adaptable bird.
Where to spot
Native to eastern Asia, including Russia, Mongolia, China, Korea, and Japan. They inhabit open woodlands, cultivated lands, towns, and cities.
How to spot
Look for its size, similar to the Eurasian Jackdaw, but pay close attention to plumage patterns: either entirely black or with a bold white collar and underparts. Listen for its high-pitched 'kya' or 'chak' calls. Often seen in mixed flocks with Rooks or Carrion Crows.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in their native range, though some populations in the far north may undertake short migratory movements. Active throughout the day.
