Spotted
The Spotted Nutcracker is a widespread and intelligent corvid found across the coniferous forests of Eurasia. It is characterized by its dark brown plumage heavily spotted with white, and a powerful bill perfectly suited for extracting seeds from cones.
Where to spot
Found in coniferous forests across a vast range from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe through Siberia to East Asia, and south to the Himalayas. It occasionally irrupts into lower elevations and broaderleaf forests.
How to spot
Look for it in mature conifer forests. Listen for its loud, grating calls. It often perches prominently on treetops or can be seen busily extracting seeds from cones, or flying with an undulating flight.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active during daylight hours, particularly visible in autumn when actively caching seeds for winter.

These birds are essential "forest gardeners," as their habit of burying thousands of conifer seeds and forgetting some leads to the successful germination and dispersal of new trees.
