The Common Raven is the largest passerine bird, a powerful and intelligent corvid with a deep, resonant call and shaggy throat feathers. Known for its impressive soaring flight and remarkable problem-solving skills, it holds significant cultural importance in many societies.
Where to spot
One of the most widespread birds in the world, found across the Northern Hemisphere. They inhabit diverse environments from desolate arctic tundra to forests, coasts, deserts, and increasingly, urban areas.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, wedge-shaped tail (especially in flight), and shaggy throat feathers. Listen for its deep, croaking 'cronk-cronk' calls, very distinct from other crows. Often seen alone or in pairs, performing impressive aerial acrobatics.
When to spot
Observable year-round throughout its vast range. They are active during daylight, often seen soaring high or perched on prominent vantage points.

Ravens are master mimics and can imitate a wide range of sounds, including other bird calls, animal noises, and even human speech. They are also known to engage in playful behaviour, such as sliding down snowdrifts.
