The North American Black-billed Magpie is a conspicuous and intelligent corvid found across western North America. It is easily identified by its iridescent black and white plumage, long tail, and distinctive chattering calls.
Where to spot
Common across western North America, from Alaska and western Canada south through the western U.S. to parts of northern Mexico, inhabiting open country, riparian zones, and suburban areas.
How to spot
Look for this large, long-tailed black and white bird foraging on the ground or perched on prominent structures like trees, fences, or power lines. Its noisy calls and distinctive flight pattern make it easy to spot.
When to spot
Present year-round. They are most active during the cooler parts of the day, especially early morning and late afternoon, but can be seen throughout the day.
