Spotted
The Curve-billed Tinamou is a distinctive species endemic to the high Andes, easily recognized by its unusually long, decurved (downward-curving) bill. It prefers high-altitude grasslands.
Where to spot
Restricted to high-altitude grasslands and páramo habitats in the Andes of southern Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Look for its unique bill shape if you get a visual. Listen for its high-pitched, somewhat mournful calls. Scan moist, grassy slopes, especially near boggy areas, where it prefers to forage.
When to spot
Active during daylight, often foraging in open areas.

The Curve-billed Tinamou's specialized bill is uniquely adapted for probing soft soil or the bases of tussock grasses to find invertebrates, a foraging strategy less common among other tinamous.
