Spotted
The Black Tinamou is a large, secretive ground-dwelling bird found in the humid montane forests of the Andes. Its predominantly dark, sooty plumage, sometimes with a reddish wash, helps it blend into the dim light of its forest habitat, making it one of the most elusive tinamous.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests and cloud forests in specific, localized areas of southeastern Peru and possibly parts of Bolivia and southern Colombia.
How to spot
Observation is extremely challenging due to its rarity and secretive behavior. Focus on listening for its deep, resonant calls in dense forest. Stealthy movement and prolonged quiet waiting periods in appropriate habitats are necessary. Local knowledge or specialized birding tours are recommended.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but particularly vocal and potentially more visible at dawn and dusk.
