Inhabits dry grasslands, puna, and agricultural areas in the Andes and adjacent lowlands of southern Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.

Listen for its soft, often repeated, hooting calls. Scan open, often sparse, vegetation. They tend to freeze or run through cover rather than flying when approached.
