Spotted
The Black-capped Tinamou is a rare and highly localized tinamou with a distinctive black cap, found in restricted areas of montane cloud forest in the Andes. It is one of the most difficult tinamous to find.
Where to spot
Endemic to humid montane cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the Andes in southern Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
How to spot
Very difficult to observe due to its rarity, restricted range, and preference for dense, high-altitude forests. Listen carefully for its unique vocalizations, which are the best indicator of its presence in its remote habitat.
When to spot
Most vocal at dawn and dusk, which are the prime times for detection through its calls.
Its strikingly black cap is one of the few prominent features on an otherwise cryptically colored bird, making it a key, though subtle, identification mark for this elusive species.
