Spotted
The Tawny-breasted Tinamou is a plump, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the ancient Tinamou family, known for their cryptic plumage and elusive nature. This species is characterized by its reddish-brown back and distinctive tawny underparts, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the dense Andean cloud forests.
Where to spot
Humid, montane cloud forests and dense bamboo thickets in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
How to spot
Observing tinamous requires immense patience and keen hearing. Listen for their distinctive, mournful calls, which can help pinpoint their location. Walk slowly and quietly along forest trails, scanning the undergrowth. Binoculars are essential for clear views in the dim forest light.
When to spot
Active during the day, particularly at dawn and dusk. They are most vocal early in the morning and late afternoon.
Despite being capable of flight, tinamous rarely fly, preferring to walk or run away from danger. When startled, they take off with a loud whirring sound but only fly short distances before crash-landing back into cover.
